Welcome to USA!
Welcome to the Underrepresented Student Alliance (USA) homepage at the Albany Medical College (AMC)! USA is an innovative coalition comprised of student organizations that represent identities and individuals that have been historically underrepresented or excluded in the field of medicine. USA is guided by its three founding principles of identity, intersectionality, and allyship. We welcome your involvement and our community is open to everyone! To learn more about USA, click here.
MSPA Recognizes LGBTQ+ Health Week!
Our USA Spotlight this month is on LGBTQ+ Health Week and the Medical Student Pride Alliance (MSPA) at Albany Medical College!
The Medical Student Pride Alliance (MSPA) is excited to announce LGBTQ+ Health Week at AMC! We have organized events and discussions to raise awareness of the healthcare needs of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer communities, and to better prepare students to serve the LGBTQ+ population in clinical settings. If you attend any of our events, you’ll get a rainbow caduceus pin at the end of the week to wear and show your allyship!
Schedule of Events:
Monday, March 22:
11:00 AM -1:00 PM — Catch us outside the library! MSPA will be posted to distribute items to promote an inclusive environment at AMC. We’ll be accepting donations of any amount to the Capital Region Pride Center (the oldest Pride Center in the country!), and In Our Own Voices, an Albany organization serving LGBTQ people of color.
LGBTQ+ Identities and Healthcare: Jen Maley-Wheeler, LCSW – The Capital Region Pride Center has generously prepared a lecture to help us better understand concepts of gender identity and sexuality, increase knowledge of the language used by LGBTQ people, and learn about the barriers to healthcare and health disparities experienced by these communities. Students will learn effective tools to provide affirmative healthcare services to LGBTQ patients. This will be on The Commons Sakai page next week.
Tuesday, March 23:
1:30 - 2:30 PM — Policies and Practices: A student led discussion on bioethics surrounding queer health – Join the Bioethics Club to examine case-studies where LGBTQ+ identities present bioethical dilemmas. An open discussion on the issues our queer patients face, and how to approach these situations with respect and justice.
Wednesday, March 24:
12:00 - 1:00 PM — LGBTQ+ Health and Wellness Lunch – Be Well AMC is organizing discussions of health and wellness of LGBTQ+ people and students as an underrepresented group.
5:30 - 6:45 PM — The Spectrum of Sex: 50 minute small group discussion to explore and discuss the ways in which healthcare providers can be inclusive of those outside of the gender binary, and/or sexual identities that are marginalized, pathologized, and excluded from healthcare curricula. Following the discussion, we will return to the main WebEx for a Q&A opportunity with Kelly Sisson, a master’s student in the field of human sexuality.
Thursday, March 25:
5:00 - 6:00 PM — LGBTQ+ Health and Wellness Dinner
7:00 - 8:30 PM — Guest Lecture: Dr. Nelson Sanchez, Vice President – Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians - Dr. Sanchez will share his perspective on being an out academic physician, including ways to overcome professional challenges, identifying facilitators supporting achievement, and sharing personal and professional advice to trainees interested in an academic medicine career.
Friday, March 26:
11:00 AM - 1:00 PM — Find us in front of the library! If you have attended any of the events or discussions for LGBTQ+ Health Week, you’ll receive a rainbow caduceus pin. Put it on your white coat to show your allyship!
3:00 - 4:30 PM — Affirming TransCare, a Patient Simulation Session (MS 169): We have teamed up with the PSCCC to provide a live, in-person, interactive experience to take social and sexual health history from a transgender patient, played by an SP. This ‘classroom case’ will be a great opportunity to practice affirmative communication techniques in a clinical setting. Participants will receive feedback from LGBTQ+ community members and AMC faculty. We are limited to 25 people, but sign up on the ‘wait list’ if it fills up! We may be able to put together two sessions if there is enough interest. The first 20 people to sign up will get a Panera gift card when they check in to the session! Please view the LGBTQ+ Identities and Healthcare lecture to prepare for this session.

Fellow Students of Albany Medical College,
Today, the Albany Medical College Underrepresented Student Alliance (USA), in solidarity with the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), Latinx Medical Student Association (LMSA), Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians (BNGAP), First Generation Students in Medicine (1GMED), Medical Student Pride Alliance (MSPA), Muslim Student Association (MSA), and American Medical Womens Association (AMWA), come together to express our deepest grief. After months of enduring the impact of COVID-19 — which amounted to disproportionate mortality rates in the Black and Latinx communities, as well as blatant acts of discrimination towards the Asian-American community — it feels both somber and exhausting to write this letter regarding the perpetual devaluement of Black lives in America...
