LMSA Celebrates Latinx Heritage Month

September 21, 2020

In honor of Latinx Heritage Month, the Latinx Medical Student Association (LMSA) hosted a Latinx Heritage Month grand rounds lecture. David Acosta, M.D., Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer for the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), presented “Emerging as an Equity-Minded Academic Medical Institution: The Third Dimension to Achieve Excellence” at noon on Monday, Sept. 21. The event was co-sponsored by the Department of Medical Education’s Division of Community Outreach and Medical Education and the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Additionally, on October 6, LMSA hosted Dr. Brenda Pereda, the current Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, who presented a grand rounds lecture on "Race, Racism and Health". USA and LMSA are proud to present the recording of both Dr. Acosta's and Dr. Pereda's grand rounds lectures, which can viewed below.

More on Latinx Heritage Month

With LHM comes the opportunity to reflect on our roots and embrace all that makes our cultures beautiful. Moreover, it provides a time for us to really focus on the needs of Latinx communities and what future and current medical professionals, whether as members of these communities themselves or as allies, can do to address them. It remains as vital as ever that we remain grounded in where we come from and recognize that our history and our people are an asset in medicine and beyond. We look forward to engaging in discussions with our fellow USA members, as well as with the greater AMC community, over the next month as we both celebrate our people and continue the much larger fight for equity.
